I blog because I feel like (hopefully) seeing someone struggle and grow and wrestle with things in their faith would be an encouragement to people (especially since entries and things can get shared in google reader.) So I go at it with the prayer that it'll be a blessing to others to see another brother struggling in his faith to work out his salvation in fear and trembling.
And then there are the completely inane posts that I hope will just make someone laugh.
1. blogging is therapeutic for me and a way to filter/strain my thoughts into something concise and meaningful. writing is no easy task, and it forces me to think, to pinpoint exactly what i am thinking into words. similarly i also journal as well, but blogging is a more of a public expression of that journaling
2. i want to keep people updated on what is happening in my life, for anyone who actually cares. sometimes it's hard to keep people constnatly updated on what's going on and a blog can help with that.
3. i never really knew the history of my parents, especially the life they had beforehand. sure they can tell me some stories here and there. but i think i also started re-blogging again to capture down everyday life for my children. so they can, when they are at the age they can understand things, go back and read the thoughts of their father as life unfolded. what if one day, my time on earth comes, and i never really had the opportunity to share things heart-to-heart with my son or future children? at very least, a blog could meaningfully capture and archive life. going along with that, the importance of a father figure is so critical and crucial in someone's development throughout the first say, 22 years of life.
4. so yes, it can be considered self-absorbed, but at the same time, it's hopefully a window for future generations to understand the thoughts and life of their dad, granddad, great granddad. for me, i never knew my grandparents on my dad's side. and even on my mom's side, i hardly know the history. so i just want to establish something. some type of legacy for generations to come.
5. reading "dreams of my father" by barack also profoundly reminded me of the similarities in obama's own search for his family with kinda my own family history, that i don't know where my great-grandparents did or were from. grandparents as well to a certain degree. a huge factor is obviously because came to the states at a young age, and so was disconnected from extended family in taiwan for many, many years. so family history has always been a bit murky/confusing
by the way, when you were in taiwan. did you learn how to make niu rou mian? i have always had fantasies of opening a niu rou mian shop in nyc. japanese ramen, watch out.
I started to practice writing consistently-- as English majors we tend to read and dissect and analyze, and our only writing ends up as solid bs-ing. I also blogged as a way of making it a creative outlet: I had all this creative energies and ideas bursting out of me and no where to put it, and blogging lets me express all my artistic hobbies and whatnots.
Plus, its a great way of sharing things with people-- my favorite moments are when people who don't know each other but both read my blog can have a good conversation with each other in real life, because of amalapropos! It's happened a couple of times, actually.
(And Ray, I would totally invest in your niu rou mian shop.)
